Farris partner Ludmila Herbst, Q.C., is the author of a two-part article whose first instalment appears in the May 2019 issue of the Advocate (2019) 77 Advocate 351, a magazine distributed to all lawyers in B.C. as well as subscribers beyond. The article deals with the dramatic history of the Komagata Maru, a ship that with its Punjabi passengers travelled from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914 but was never allowed to dock. The story remains deeply felt and the article focuses on the legal aspects of the events that unfolded. Part I details events up to and including a decision issued in July 1914 by the then newly established B.C. Court of Appeal; Part II, which is to be published in an upcoming issue of the Advocate, addresses what happened next.
