Congratulations to Allard Law Wilson Moot Team
Farris lawyers were proud to support UBC Allard School of Law students in their recent mooting success. Allard sent two teams to the Wilson Moot, an annual competition where law students from across Canada argue a mock appeal concerning a legal issue impacting women or minorities, typically involving application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The 2024 problem concerned a Charter challenge to the denial of a transgender inmate’s application for transfer from a female prison to a male prison. Students argued whether the decision infringed the inmate’s section 7 and 15 rights, including whether gender identity should be recognized as an analogous ground under the Charter; whether the decision was a reasonable limit on the inmate’s rights; and the appropriate remedy. The UBC team performed brilliantly and placed third overall (tying with University of Victoria). Students Erin Valentine, Tora Oliphant, Gabriella Pasolli and Jessie Han represented UBC and were coached by Allison Render (Associate, Farris LLP), Margery Pazdor (Disability Alliance BC) and Professor Hoi Kong (UBC). Numerous Farris lawyers and students also acted as judges for practice moots, helping the team prepare for the big event.
