Farris Represents McLeod Lake Indian Band
Farris recently represented McLeod Lake Indian Band (“MLIB”) in achieving a significant milestone in sustainable forestry and self-determination with the acquisition of 50% of Canadian Forest Products Ltd.’s forest holdings in the Mackenzie Timber Supply Area. Sekani Forest Products Ltd., wholly owned by MLIB, acquired Forest Licence #A98730 which will provide Sekani with rights to harvest 437,000 m3 on an annual basis within the Mackenzie region. Farris Lawyers, Al Hudec and Megan O’Neill represented MLIB and Sekani in the acquisition of the tenure and in the associated bank financing. This strategic purchase not only underscores the Band’s commitment to responsible stewardship of the land but also represents an historic advancement in the overall management of the forest resource within the MLIB traditional territory (and beyond). MLIB Chief Harley Chingee stated: “Our Nation’s purchase of additional forest tenure in the region is more than an economic transaction; it is a significant step in our journey towards self-determination and empowerment for the McLeod Lake Indian Band”. Chingee further stated that: “this transaction will bolster the economic position of our towns of Mackenzie, McLeod Lake, and of the Omineca Region as a whole”. With this new tenure, MLIB becomes one of the largest forest license holders in the Omineca Region.
