Farris Articling Student Megan Walwyn was recently chosen as the winner of the CBA 2024 Charities and Not-for-Profit Law student essay contest. Megan’s paper, “Does Canada’s Registered Charity Regime Survive Charter Scrutiny?: The Interplay Between Charities, Politics, and Freedom of Expression Following Canada Without Poverty“, reviews the constitutionality of the restrictions on political expression by charities imposed by the Income Tax Act (Canada) against s. 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and grapples with questions regarding the role of charities in our society. Congratulations Megan! Read the full paper here.
