Congratulations to Allard Law Wilson Moot Team
Farris lawyers were proud to support UBC Allard School of Law students in their recent mooting success at the Wilson Moot, an annual competition where law students from across Canada argue a mock appeal concerning a legal issue impacting women or minorities, typically involving application of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The 2026 problem concerned a challenge to the denial of a claim for refugee protection involving the use of an AI screening tool on the grounds of both procedural fairness and Charter rights. The UBC team performed brilliantly and placed second overall. Students Sina Naseri, Nyla Nguy, Kristy Kwok and Tim Yu represented UBC and were coached by Allison Render (Associate, Farris LLP), Brienne Gloeckler (Associate, McMillan LLP) and Professor Hoi Kong (UBC). Justice Karakatsanis of the SCC chaired the panel for the final round, with Justice Pomerance of the Ontario Court of Appeal and Justice Cook of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice also sitting. Numerous Farris lawyers also acted as judges for practice moots, helping the team prepare for the big event.
